C and I make it our goal to pray together daily. Sometimes this looks like 20 minutes of us praying for our families, our friends, our country, and other prayer needs. And honestly, some nights it means one very sleepy Maher praying while the other even more sleepy Maher “agrees”.
Today I was reading through Psalms and came across this scripture.
“The righteous will flourish like a palm tree,
they will grow like a cedar of Lebanon;
planted in the house of the Lord,
they will flourish in the courts of our God.
They will still bear fruit in old age,
they will stay fresh and green,
proclaiming, “The Lord is upright;
he is my Rock, and there is no wickedness in him.”
Psalm 92:12-15
I started praying this over my parents. That they “will still bear fruit in old age,
they will stay fresh and green”.
I pray that they will be like Job whose latter life proved to be better than his former years.
I think there is something beautiful about praying for the generations. Whether we are Abraham, Isaac, or Jacob, God loves to do things in family lines. God’s heart is always for the family, and I believe His desire is that we are able to pass on more than just a material inheritance.
So we pray for the fullness over our parents and those who have gone before us, and we also pray for the generations to come.
We pray that our future children will know Him, love Him, and be healthy, happy, and beautiful. We sow seeds in the the soil of the destiny. We bless them before we see their faces or snuggle them. We pray that they will change the world, and be walking demonstrations of the love of God.
I pray that our family will be known as a Psalm 126 family…
“Our mouths were filled with laughter,
our tongues with songs of joy.
Then it was said among the nations,
“The Lord has done great things for them.”
The Lord has done great things for us,
and we are filled with joy.”
Psalm 126:2-3
So today, I encourage you to pray and think generationally. Bless those who have gone before you and bless those who will come behind you. Pray that all of your family will walk in the fullness and be blessed in every area.
“Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up”. Galatians 6:9
